WIND GENERATORS
Wind; a source of energy produced by the rotation of the earth
combined with the uneven heating of the
atmosphere as well as the irregularities in the earth’s
surface.
Wind turbine generators have been used for thousands of years;
however, they are dependant on nature’s wind flow and must be constructed to harness this energy. Wind
generators can be a great source of electricity to power a single home or farm as well as an entire
area.
Some things to take into consideration to build wind generator
towers are the wind’s flow patterns in your area. These can be altered and affected by vegetation, the
natural terrain of the earth as well as bodies of water in the area.
A wind generator is the device that converts wind into
electricity. Wind turbine generators convert the kinetic energy in the wind into mechanical power first and
then the wind generator converts it into electricity. Mechanical energy can simply turn a pump or grind wheel
if the generator does not turn it into electricity.
A small scale home wind generator can be uses to
power certain outside equipment or to supplement the home with electricity. Some home wind generators can
actually power the entire home if the proper location is available to build wind generator
towers.
Electricity is generated by wind turbine generators by the
process of the wind blowing the blades, the blades turning which in turn spins a shaft that is connected to a
generator.
Without the generator the turbine simply turns the shaft that can
then turn a gear on a pump or on a grind wheel.
Most wind generators have two, three or sometimes four blades.
Generally the blades face upwind, or into the wind.
As far as home wind generators, these units are smaller and are
less than 100 kilowatts. Larger wind generators can range in size from 100 kilowatts to several megawatts and
will often be found in groups also called a wind farm.
When looking to build wind generator systems you must first
consider what you will use the wind generator for to determine the type and size you will require. Then you
must look for a location with a constant wind flow to harness this valuable resource. Like solar energy, wind
energy is a free and renewable energy source that creates no harmful emissions.
These types of alternative energy sources can greatly impact the
finances in the savings as well as greatly impacting the earth regarding pollution and by reducing the
dependence on non renewable energy sources such as oil and coal.
